Biography

Maziyar Mohammadioun is a multidisciplinary visual artist, photographer and visual researcher based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Working across projects in Northern Ireland and Iran, his practice explores memory, material culture and sensory experience through photography, paper engineering, installation, moving image and participatory artworks.

After more than fifteen years working as a photojournalist, his interest gradually shifted from documenting events to investigating the stories carried by places, objects and archives. Rather than presenting photographs as finished images, he develops works that invite audiences to uncover narratives through physical interaction, sound, text and spatial experience.

Holding both BA and MA degrees in Photography, Maziyar’s academic research focused on the Social History of the Senses, examining how photographs can reveal experiences beyond vision, including sound, smell, touch and taste. This research continues to shape his artistic practice, bridging documentary traditions with installation, material culture and audience participation.

His projects combine historical research with contemporary artistic practice, transforming photographs, found objects and archival materials into immersive experiences that encourage viewers to actively reconstruct memory. Recent works include Museum of Oblivion, a multisensory installation exploring memory through photographs, objects and oral storytelling, and Beast and Devil, an interactive pop-up photobook selected for the Belfast Photo Festival 2025 Open Submission, where it was exhibited alongside the festival’s selected photobooks.

In 2026, Maziyar was selected for Dialogue for Moving Images, an interdisciplinary residency bringing together experimental filmmakers and composers to create new collaborative works. His current practice continues to expand photography beyond the image, creating participatory experiences that connect historical research, material culture and sensory storytelling.
